» 28/07/2010, Posted by Diana Beattie

The Minister of Maori Affairs, Hon Dr Pita Sharples, is seeking to establish a 12 member Maori Youth Council. The Maori Youth Council will provide practical advice and feedback on relevant public policy and initiatives that have a significant impact on Maori rangatahi. The primary focus is on achieving best outcomes for rangatahi through the development of youth leadership.

The Maori Youth Council has been identified as a mechanism for providing strong youth leadership and practical advice and feedback. In order to be most effective, this group will meet with the Minister of Maori Affairs at least quarterly and as a group supported by officials bi-monthly. The provision of mentoring from Maori leaders or rangatahi focused organisations will also be a critical aspect of the Council's progression.

Nominations are sought from Maori youth candidates who have a primary interest in promoting and advocating rangatahi issues. These candidates should be aged between 18-25 years (inclusive) and have a range of personal backgrounds and experiences.

The term of membership on the Maori Youth Council is for one year. Membership will include representatives with a mix of geographical locations, iwi affiliations gender balance as well as those attributes listed above.
Nominees must complete the nomination form and ensure it is received no later than 5pm on Friday 30 July 2010.
