It is with great sadness that we let you know of the sudden passing this weekend of Putu Mihaka.

Putu was well-known not only as a Te Arawa kaumatua, but also for his great contribution to community work in Rotorua. Putu's deep commitment to supporting rangatahi and their families was evident through his work with Te Waiariki Purea Trust over a period of 15 years. He provided leadership of the Trust's nationally renowned Te Arawa Journey, and worked with many young people and their whanau.

Putu provided guidance to many, and his cultural input supported the development of Waka Ama groups in Rotorua. Putu was generous with his time and support, and was respected by those who have worked with him. His quiet and warm manner will be sadly missed by many.

Putu is lying at Te Takinga Marae. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday 9 March at 11.00am, at Te Takinga Marae, State Highway 33, Ohau Channel.
