Recommendations of Maori Youth Council

» 12/06/2011, Posted by Site Admin

A paper presenting the findings of the Maori Youth Council in response to the call from the Minister of Maori Affairs 'to hear directly from young people what they think about how the Government's policies and programmes work for them'.

The Maori Youth Council was established in September 2010 to provide practical advice and feedback on relevant public policy and initiatives that have a significant impact on rangatahi Maori. The primary focus of the Council is on achieving best outcomes for rangatahi through the development of youth leadership.

Following a series of four hui facilitated by Te Puni Kokiri, and many hours of personal time dedicated to researching and considering the issues, the report presents 23 recommendations to the Minister. The recommendations are targeted at improving the outcomes for Maori youth from the Government's current initiatives in Maori education, youth justice, youth development, and Maori youth representation.

The findings and recommendations to Ministers are presented in the paper according to the relevant policy areas. However, there are four common themes present in the recommendations. They are:

* Greater use of whanau- and community-based initiatives
* Improved access to information
* More targeted resources, and
* Greater use of Te Reo Maori to engage youth.

The full report of the Maori Youth Council is attached, as well as an extract of the report recommendations.
